Warmer Spring Weather On The Way
Good news! After what feels like forever of cold, cloudy, and miserable weather, Southern Ontario is finally about to get the spring weather we all deserve. Let’s break down what’s changing and what we can expect in the coming weeks.
Warmer Weather Ahead
Remember those chilly single-digit temperatures we’ve been stuck with? Well, they’re finally on their way out! Looking at the temperature forecast (shown below), we can see a clear warming trend starting late next week.
By late April, we’re looking at temperatures climbing slightly above average into the mid to upper teens, maybe even into the lower 20s! Now that’s more like spring! The overnight lows will also become much more comfortable, generally staying above freezing for most areas.
Why Is This Happening?
Think of our recent weather pattern like a giant refrigerator door that’s been stuck open, this represents the polar jet stream weakening, letting all the cold air spill down from the Arctic. Now, that door is finally closing thanks to a large ridge that’s going to be building up over Eastern North America. Take a look at this weather map showing the pattern change:
See how the blue colour (cold air) shifts to an orange colour that covers much of Eastern North America? That’s our warm air building up! This ridge will act like a barrier, blocking the cold Arctic air and letting warm southern air move in instead.
Pattern Evolution
The transition to warmer weather will happen in stages. Let’s look at how the temperature pattern changes:
Mid-April (April 16-21)
During this period, we’ll still see some back-and-forth between warm and cool air as the pattern begins to shift. The blue colors over our region show we’re not quite done with the cool weather yet.
Late April (April 22-27)
As we head later into the month, the oranges and reds on this map show much warmer air finally taking over. This is when we’ll see those consistent spring-like temperatures we’ve been waiting for.
Get Ready for Some Active Weather
As we transition into this warmer pattern, we can expect:
- More wet weather
- A decent chance of thunderstorms
- The possibility of severe weather
The green areas indicate where we expect above-normal precipitation. This is pretty typical for spring in our region - think of it as nature’s way of fighting between winter and summer!
What to Expect
By the end of April, here’s what our weather should look like:
- Daytime temperatures regularly reaching the mid to upper teens
- Nights staying above freezing (goodbye, frost!)
- More sunny breaks
- It’ll feel more humid (but not summer-humid yet)
Looking at the temperature forecast for the next couple of weeks:
- April 11-14: Still cool, with highs in the upper single digits, brief warmup
- April 15-18: Second round of cool weather, risk of snowfall and rain showers
- April 19-21: Slowly warming up, reaching the low to mid-teens
- Rest of April: Much warmer, with highs potentially reaching the upper teens
